No-surprises version: how long each stage takes, how dusty it really gets, and when you can use the kitchen again.
Most people getting a backsplash installed in Wethersfield have never hired a tile setter before, which is fair — most people do this once a decade. Here is the whole process, honestly, including the parts that are inconvenient.
| Step | How long | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Quote visit | 20–30 min | We measure the wall, talk tile, bring options. Written fixed price follows within about 48 hours |
| 2. Tile selection | Your call | Buy from your supplier or we order it. For handmade tile, check dye lots |
| 3. Scheduling | Typically 1–2 weeks | Small jobs move faster. You get a real arrival window, not a "sometime Tuesday" |
| 4. Demo (if replacing) | 2–4 hours | Old splash off, plastic barriers up, counters and floors protected |
| 5. Wall prep | 1–3 hours | Patching, flattening and priming. In Wethersfield this step is often longer than people expect |
| 6. Tile day | 4–8 hours | Tile set, cuts around outlets and windows, edges trimmed neatly |
| 7. Grout day | 2–3 hours | Next day: grout in, haze wiped off, sealed where required |
| 8. Walkthrough | 10 min | We tour it together and you get care instructions |
Demo creates dust — there is no way around it. We seal the kitchen opening with plastic and sweep as we go. Expect a light film on nearby surfaces that wipes off, not a construction site.
An oscillating tool and a wet saw will be running during demo and cuts. If you work from home, plan around the first morning.
You keep the kitchen for most of the job. The sink area may be off-limits for a short period while the tile cures.
Light use the same evening after grouting, normal cleaning after about 72 hours, and harsh cleaners after a week.
Wethersfield is Connecticut's oldest town, and Old Wethersfield has genuine 17th- and 18th-century houses where the fireplaces, beams and uneven walls are protected features. The rest of town is mostly 1950s–60s suburban. Practically, that means the prep stage can run longer in Old Wethersfield than in a newer house — plaster over brick around original beam and fireplace walls is common here, and it cannot be rushed. We build that into the schedule rather than pretending it will not happen.
Do I need to be home the whole time?
No. Most clients are in and out. We do want a walkthrough at the end, and we will send photos if you cannot be there.
What if the wall is worse than expected behind the old splash?
It happens, especially in older Wethersfield homes. We stop, show you what we found and agree the fix before continuing. That is why we do not quote removal as a vague allowance. See removal & replacement.
How soon can you start?
It varies with the season. Call (860) 990-2332 and we will give you a real date, not a range we hope to hit.
